DRAWING FROM YOUR WELL WITHIN (PART ONE)

In the power of positive thinking, Dr.  Norman Vincent Peale wrote,
“Everywhere you encounter people who are inwardly afraid, who shrink from life, who suffer from a deep sense of inadequacy and insecurity, who doubt their own powers. Deep within themselves, they mistrust their abilities to meet responsibilities or to grasp opportunities. Always, they are beset by the sinister and vague fear that something is not going to be quite alright. They do not believe that they have it in them to be what they want to be and so they try to make themselves content with something less than that of which they are capable. Thousands upon thousands go crawling on their hands and knees, afraid and defeated and in most cases, such frustration of power is unnecessary."

Just like Dr. Peale emphasized, this  need not be so. In the words of Dr, Karl Menninger, “Attitudes are more important than facts.” You may not be able to change the reality but you can change your attitude towards the reality. Any fact facing us, however difficult, even seemingly hopeless is not as important as our attitude towards that fact. How you think about the fact may defeat you even before you do anything about it. Do not permit a fact to overwhelm you mentally, before you start to deal with it actually.  On the other hand, a confident and optimistic thought pattern can modify or overcome the fact all together.

If you feel you are defeated and lost confidence in your ability to win, sit down, take a piece of paper, and make a list, not of the factors that against you, but of those that are for you. When you think of factors against you, you build them up into a power beyond that which is justified. They will assume a formidable strength beyond that which they possess naturally.

But if on the contrary, you mentally visualize, affirm and re-affirm your assets and keep your thoughts on them, emphasizing them to the fullest, you will rise out of any difficulty, no matter how it may be. Your inner powers will re assert themselves and with the help of God, lift you from defeat to victory. They key therefore is to constantly fill your mind with thoughts of confidence, faith and security. Remember the words of Basil King,
“Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.”
