GOAL SETTING AND GO GETTING;  ANY NEXUS?  (PART ONE)

Thomas Edison, the celebrated inventor, set himself an ambitious goal. It was to come up with a major new invention every six months, a minor invention every ten days. When he died, he had 1,092 U.S. patents and over 2,000 foreign ones. Edison knew that by setting such goals for himself and striving to reach them, he was bound to increase his output.


It has been the same way for men all over history. Many men had overwhelming desires which they translated into goals. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of a country free of prejudice and injustice. Bill Gates dreamed of a world in which every home has a computer that is connected to the Internet. Buckminster Fuller dreamed of a world where everybody had access to electrical power.



These high achievers see the world from a whole different perspective—as a place where amazing things can happen, where billions of lives can be improved, where new technology can change the way we live, and where the world’s resources can be leveraged for the greatest possible mutual gain. They didn't stop at dreaming, though, they translated their desires through step-by-step actions or what we can call goals. So simply put, desire makes a man achieves in the heart while goals makes him acheive in the earth.




You can apply this same principle to your life.  Do you want to lose weight?  Why not set a goal of loosing X pounds or kilograms of weight weekly. Do you want to write a book?  A novel? A blogpost or article?  Why not set a goal of writing X pages daily. Are you a singer who wants to produce an audio CD?  Why not give yourself a daily goal of writing X amount of lines or spending X hours in the studio daily? Attempt very big goals. Let it be so great that it is doomed for failure unless God be in it. Also, let it be specific and measurable. Remember that what you cannot measure, you cannot monitor



Let me explain what happens when you do this. Each time you set a goal, something called "structural tension" is increased in your brain. Whatever goal you give to your subconscious mind, it will work night and day to achieve. So your brain finds a way of reproducing the mental image it has into your physical reality. In the absence of clearly defined goals, we are forced to concentrate on activity and ultimately become enslaved by it.  Without goals you float aimlessly but as you achieve your goals, there is a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment.
