GOAL SETTING AND GO-GETTING; THE NEXUS (PART EIGHT)

ADVANTAGES OF GOALS

12. Goal setting gives you so much happiness that the very act of thinking about your goals make you happy even before you start to work on it. Goal setting and the steps towards goal achievement can greatly increase your happiness level.

As Earl Nightingale said, Happiness is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal. Think back to the times when you were very happy, you will agree with me that most of them were due to the realization of a worthy goal which took you days, weeks, months or even years to accomplish. Typical examples would be gaining admission into the university, graduating, publishing a book and so on and so forth.

Goals give you a sense of meaning, purpose and direction which are essentials of life. You feel truly happy, energized and effective when you are making progress, step-by-step, towards something that is important to you. Goal setting also puts you in control as you worry less about the future and the things that you cannot change. With goals, the change in your life becomes self-determined and self-directed. As Aristotle, the Greek philosopher said, man is a teleological organism, from the Greek word, teleos meaning consequence, goals or purpose. We feel most happy when we get good consequences from purposeful activities. You are most happy when you experience  satisfactory consequences from the actions you have taken.

13. Goal setting boosts your confidence as well. This is because every step you take towards your goals infuses in you a strong belief that you can do more, hence your confidence level is boosted. Goals increase what psychologists have called internal locus of control. In other words, with goals, you are self directed and in complete control of your life. You feel more optimistic, positive, self-directed and in complete control of your life. Without goals, you have an external locus of control  blaming your boss, your bills, your marriage, the economy, childhood problems, your background and so on and so forth.
Henceforth, become a goal-seeking organism; adopt a laser-like focus which makes you always thinking and talking about what you want rather than what you do not want. Like a guided missile, a homing pigeon or the great eagle, choose to move unerringly towards your goals that are truly important to you. In the end, clear goals enable you to release your full potentials for personal and professional success.
