THE BEN CARSON STORY

BENJAMIN SOLOMON CARSON

He was born to Sonya (a school dropout) and Robert Solomon Carson (a Baptist Minister) on September 18, 1951 in the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan and the country of United States of America.

Carson lived with his single mother and he was a Black in a predominantly racist nation. Initially a known dullard and experiencing difficulties in his studies, his story gradually changed when his mother limited her children’s T.V. time until they completed their homework and summarized two books a week from the library. She demanded that they submitted book reviews (reports) to her even though she could barely read them.

Carson soon began to find his new found hobby as more enjoyable than watching television. In fact, a fifth-grade science teacher encouraged Carson’s interests in lab work after the youngster was the only student to identify an Obsidian rock sample brought to school.

Carson who was previously an object of ridicule became a world renowned neurosurgeon. He authored books such as “Think Big” and “The Big Picture.” Carson went on to become the Director of Pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital at a very young age of 33 years old and he is widely known for separating Siamese twins among other medical breakthroughs.
